Many people wonder why I enjoy a good Dungeons and Dragons game. "Gee Qulore, why would you want to play a fantasy role-playing game when you're a superhero?" I suppose it's a good question because one would think that fighting the Fatal Five, Mordru, Starfinger and the rest would make you want to take a trip to the beach or watch a nice relaxing vid during your time off. I guess I just learned to love D&D from my Dad and his friends. Even the excitement of being a Legionnaire couldn't quench the guys love of adventure and excitement. Even superheroes need a little bit of fantasy - Dad enjoyed playing a Barbarian.

Thom and Dirk were the biggest D&D geeks though - especially when Dreamgirl was ignoring Thom. They'd pull all nighters. Sometimes it could get a bit out of hand though. All that kono juice starts to affect your senses after awhile.

Garth never got into the game - he sometimes worried about Thom and Dirk's obsession. They began to get more and more into the game, and while Cos and Dad would still play occasionally even they began to notice that Thom and Dirk had crossed a line. That's when Dad decided to show them that too much fantasy can be a bit... unhealthy.

Of course even after their close encounter Dirk and Thom just couldn't resist. Now you know why Dreamgirl really left Thom and why Gigi said no to Dirk's proposal. When D&D comes before your girlfriend it's probably time to quit.

Most of us have learned from Thom and Dirk though, and can enjoy a good RPG after a long day battling khunds or evil sorcerers (ect).

Dawnstar report

Just a quick note:

If JSA #1 doesn't lie with their little teaser at the end of this issue... it looks like we may have the reappearence of Dawnstar!

In the second panel of the teaser (at the end of the issue it has a page titled "Coming this year in the JSA") we have what appears to be Dawnstar's arm~ Legion flight ring and all! Here's hoping it's not some sort of let down like the recent Legion issue with Dawnstar on the cover was.

Home Planet: Talock VIII
Eyes: blue
Hair: black
Appearance: Tasmia is average height and deceptively delicate looking. Like many Talokians she has blue skin (the Hill people of Talock possess green skin).
First Appearance: Adventure Comics #365

Shadow Lass is the heroine of Talock VIII when she first meets the Legion. While away on a mission in space Talock VIII changed from a peaceful planet to a violent one - so much so that the Talockians destroyed any ships violating their space. The UP turns to the Legion for help and introduces them to Tasmia who is to be their guide. After a dangerous journey they end up in a citadel which Tasmia knows wasn't there when she was last on Talock. Once finding their way into the citadel they find that they've fallen into a trap! They wake up individually in death traps that seem to have been made specifically for them. Shadow Lass (who we learn has a weakness to bright light) is in a chamber of lights from which she can find no escape. Knowing that the light will eventually kill her she makes a last effort to call the shadows to her aid by blocking out the light's glare with her cape. After managing to break free the Legionnaires discover that the power they used to escape was used to fuel a dimensional warp - which released the Fatal Five from the dimension they had been trapped in! Realizing that the Talockians had been controlled from afar by Tharock, the Legionnaires quickly returned to Earth.
It was here that Shadow Lass became a Legionnaire. She followed the Legion back to Earth having developed feelings for Brainiac 5 (Dad's always been popular with the girls...) and when the Legion was prepared to go head on with the Fatal Five, Shadow Lass was sworn in by Superboy since she was determined to fight with them. Shadow Lass ended up being the MVP for her first real Legion battle, KOing the Emerald Empress and providing Superboy, Brainiac 5, Karate Kid, and Cosmic Boy with the cover they needed to escape the Fatal Five's grasp.

Abilities: can see in absolute darkness, can cast shadows - has a weakness for bright light

A *VERY* Brief History

Tasmia gained her powers from the spirits of her ancestors. After joining the Legion she eventually fell in love with Mon'el who in turn fell in love with her when they were in Smallville hiding from Mordru. Tasmia and Mon'el eventually married. Post Zero-Hour Tasmia was reintroduced as Umbra with similar origins to that of Shadow Lass. During Mark Waid's reboot Tasmia is once again Shadow Lass but seem much more martially oriented than before. She is currently dating Ultra Boy (but with Mon'el's reintroduction who knows....).

Personal Notes

I've always loved Tasmia. She was one of the few people who was never afraid to stand up to Dad, she'd always tell things exactly as she saw them. I still think that her and Lar's love story was one of the sweetest things - the way she travelled the universe just hoping to cure him, and wouldn't leave his side no matter what.

Dawnstar was first seen at age 16 as a recent Legion Academy Graduate. Because of the unique abilities she possessed she was given Legion membership.

A *VERY* Brief History

Dawnstar is the child of Mistrider and Moonwalker and was born on the planet Starhaven. She also has two younger brothers named Greybird and Greatfire. Before joining the Legion Academy her parents started a business built around their daughter's amazing tracking abilities. Once she joined the Legion, Dawnstar sent her Legion stipend to her home world. She was also seen occasionally working for her parents guiding spaceships when away from the Legion. Dawnstar was especially useful to the Legion for tracking down missing Legionnaires as well as the occasion villain. She had a love affair with Wildfire, however, even when he possessed a body they discovered there couldn't be a physical side to their relationship. Sadly, even though they both loved each other, Wildfire couldn't bear the thought of hurting Dawnstar and ended the relationship. Dawnstar also played a part in Crisis on Infinite Earths. Dawnstar hasn't appeared since Zero Hour.

Personal Notes

I didn't have the honor of meeting Dawnstar myself as she was a rather distant Legionnaire, eventually switching to reserve status. Dad seemed to respect her although he too said he had never gotten to know her all that well. Shadow Lass always spoke very highly of her and I regret not having met her.

Brainiac 5 first appears as a Legion hopeful along with Supergirl. This is Supergirl's second attempt to join the Legion as last time she succeeded in her task but Red Kryptonite made her temporarily too old to join the superheroes. Brainy takes an instant liking to the girl of steel. During the middle of their trials he saves Kara's life by giving her his force field belt This gives her protection from a green kryptonite meteor which she summarily dispatches. Brainiac 5 receives Legion membership not only because of his exceptional abilities, but because he was willing to put his own life in danger to save Supergirl.

A *VERY* Brief History

Querl Dox is the descendant of Vril Dox, the founder of L.E.G.I.O.N. and the adopted son of Brainiac. Brainiac 5 originally joined the Legion because he wanted to do good make up for some of his ancestor's past deeds. His major flaws are his inability to foresee how his experiments could pose a danger to others (such as his creation of COMPUTO which resulted in a robot revolt) and his unstable emotions. In Mark Waid's Legion he recently became obsessed with bringing Dream Girl back to life and while it seems that he may have succeeded - to an extent - his team mates are now concerned about his place amongst the team. He even revealed that he had a way to neutralize every Legionnaire.

Personal Notes

Wow, Dad can be pretty arrogant sometimes. He still regrets how much damage COMPUTO caused, especially the death of 1/3 of Triplicate Girl. Still, I think people forget that he really does care. It's thanks to him that Mon'el was cured of lead poisoning, and the invention of the Legion flight ring really advanced Legion tactics. Mom's death hit him pretty hard, and he really does try to better the world he lives in. I hope I can be half the Legionnaire he is because even that would be a fantastic accomplishment.
